Computer systems projects are risky endeavors involving many resources often from different organizations and external vendors while introducing technologies that are new to the business. Project management strives to apply control methodologies to ensure that these risks are managed and the project achieves the goals of its stakeholders. Project Management services include: Resource Planning—the identification of the skills needed for the project team and the individuals who can support these requirements. Project Planning— identifying the sequence of tasks and estimated timeframes with special consideration to time and resource constraints. Risk Analysis—the identification of project risks, assessment of severity and creation of risk mitigation plans. Communications Planning—establish communication methods and status reporting. Change Control— definition of processes and procedures for controlling change to cost, schedule or scope of the project, including its objectives. Test Planning— development of test cycles that effectively compare the deliverables to their requirements and specifications. Deployment Planning— management of the tasks and resources required to prepare for the launch or cutover, this includes a rollback plan and acceptance criteria. Launch Day and Post Launch Planning— a detailed schedule of steps with resources and timeframes is required to ensure that the cutover is orchestrated in the appropriate sequence and expected timeframes. Legacy System Retirement— Often the source system remains in place for a period of time after a new system is implemented. These systems are costly to maintain and a retirement plan and checklist is used to archive the system and any data not converted to the new system.
